Labasheeda live @ NXNE in 2009

November 15, 2024 by Saskia Van Der Geissen
Canada, labasheeda, musicconference, musicfestival, musicvideo, Neutral, northbynortheast, NXNE, SneekyDee's, toronto

Back in 2009 Labasheeda was invited to play at the North by Northeast festival, so they decided to book some more shows in Canada and do their first tour outside of Europe. Exciting times! Labasheeda was a quartet at that moment, but unfortunately the bassist couldn’t make it, because he lost his passport shortly before we were about to leave.

The band did two shows in Toronto, which were both filmed by Aldo Erdic. He edited a live video for one of the songs we they at a club called Sneaky Dee’s, but the set during NXNE remained in the Labasheeda vaults. Until now, because the complete performance at Neutral is now available on their YouTube-channel.

(When Labasheeda played at NXNY the well received EP ‘A Few of a Polulation‘ was only 2 months out by then.)

And so...

‘And So…’, Bright Brown’s Presto Chango debut, out today as an illustrated lyric book & digital album!

September 30, 2022 by Saskia Van Der Geissen

Born out of the desire to create an lp-like experience with the immediacy of a digital download, Brooklyn based songwriter & Chapman Stick player, Alex Nahas, aka Bright Brown, is releasing, “And So…”, a hand written lyric book with a corresponding download code of seven songs written in isolation over 2020 & 2021 and accompanied by illustrations contributed from Pete Moulthrop, aka Bearded Tales of Woe.

Alex Nahas loves limits. That may seem odd coming from Brooklyn N.Y.’s singer / multi-instrumentalist who plays the Chapman Stick and harbors a deep affinity for the likes of Peter Gabriel and Talk Talk, but Nahas’s solo project Bright Brown is a case study in how to wring more from less. As Bright Brown has evolved over the course of three LPs, two EPs and, most recently, the new Digital EP / Illustrated Lyric Book, ‘And So…’, reflecting the post 2020 world seen through his dark but hopeful lens, Nahas has carved out a niche that slots into the same lineage as David Byrne, David Bowie, Daniel Lanois and Elvis Costello: all one-of-a-kind artists who shoehorned unorthodox approaches into highly digestible pop music. There’s the unmistakable common thread of a seasoned songwriter with a flair for mood, texture and atmosphere. Thoughtful and reflective with a knack for rendering outside-world concerns in the landscape of the personal, Bright Brown continues to venture into new frontiers, casting the Stick in a fresh light as a songwriter’s instrument with each successive song.

The Illustrated EP / Lyric Book will be out on Friday October 7th, 2022

July 16, 2022 by Saskia Van Der Geissen

Last May Labasheeda was touring through the Czech Republic and Germany. The last stop was Auerbach, where the band did a live-in-the-studio session at Fuzzy Room Recordings. Thanks so much to Andreas Eckert for this very nice video of Labasheeda’s new song Sparkle, featuring Bas Snabilie on the snare.
